Isla Mujeres

Isla is so close that you can plan your own trip to the island. All you have to do is catch the ferries to Isla Mujeres that leave every 20 minutes from Puerto Juárez or Punta Sam. There are also water taxis and shuttles leaving from the Hotel Zone, but they are more expensive.

If you want someone else to do the planning and don’t mind spending the money there are a number of excellent tours offered that include a boat ride, snorkeling, shopping in downtown Isla, open-bar buffet lunches, and listening to music or lounging at Playa Norte. Click to up.

Tours Isla Mujeres runs an Isla Mujeres day tour that departs at 10 AM from the pier in front of Fat Tuesday's and returns at 5 PM. For reservations contact (998) 849-4247. Aquaworld offers a similar trip with an all-you-can-eat buffet. For reservations contact (998) 885-2288. Caribbean Funday offers family cruises to Isla. Contact (998) 884-3760.

Dolphin Discovery sails daily from Playa Langosta and Playa Tortugas to the company's dock on Isla Mujeres. Their swim with the dolphins program includes an instruction video, a 30-minute swim and time to explore the island. Contact (998) 883-0777 or 883-0779.

Cozumel can be explored on your own but does take some planning; day trips are harder since the Island is farther away and there is a lot to explore. To get to Cozumel on your own you must first go to Playa del Carmen and then take the ferry across to Cozumel. It takes about 40 minutes for the bus trip to Playa and another 45 minutes for the ferry ride over to Cozumel. The ferry stops running early in the evening.

For quick day trips you may want to consider Aquaworld’s trip to Cozumel aboard the deluxe Ocean Princess. The tour includes guided shopping and sightseeing, a beach buffet with food and drinks and a chance to snorkel, dive or just explore the island. The trip leaves daily at 8 AM and returns at 6 PM. For reservations contact the office at (998) 885-2288.

Once on the island, there are a number of tours you can take. If you want to explore the northern end of the island, check out Wild Tours (Tel: 987- 258-76 or 987- 267-47). It offers a 2.5-hour journey on an ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) through the jungle. Tickets include a light lunch, drinks, a visit to a Maya ruin and a stopover at the beach. To see the brilliant underwater life around Cozumel without getting wet, contact Fiesta Cozumel (Tel: 987- 207-25), for a three-hour trip aboard the glass bottomed Principe or the partial-submarine Nautilus IV. Each tour includes soft drinks and beer. You can also stay dry and explore the Chankanaab Reef aboard the Atlantis Submarine. Located at Carretera Chankanaab, Km 4. Tel: 987- 256-71. Click to up.

Jungle Tours

There are a variety of tours through the mangroves of Laguna Nichupté that end with a snorkeling trip out to the coral reef. You can either pilot your own jet ski or cruise on a boat.

Those new to snorkeling or traveling with young children may prefer a boat tour like the one AquaWorld offers to its private island, "Isla Paraiso". After going through the jungle by boat, you spend the rest of the day on a man-made island with change rooms, a restaurant and rest area. Food and drinks along with snorkeling equipment and a guided tour to the reed is included in the price. Aquaworld also offers a jungle tour where you drive your own speedboat through the mangrove jungle, stopping off at the ocean to snorkel the reef. The 2.5-hour trip includes use of a two-person speedboat, snorkeling gear, soft drinks and lockers at the marina. Contact Aquaworld at (9) 885-2288, Blvd. Kukulcán, Km 15.2.

Barracuda Marina. Blvd. Kukulcán, Km 14. Tel: (9) 885-3444 offers a jungle tour on jet skis. You follow a guide through the mangroves, exploring the plant life and most interesting places in the lagoon. You continue to the ocean where you can snorkel or just relax on the beach. The 3 hours trip includes drinks and beer. Reservations are recommended. Click to up.

Goyo's Custom Jungle Adventures  takes you on an excursion just outside of Puerto Morelos for a guided jungle walk, swim at a cenote and have lunch at a Maya ranch. An extended tour also includes a 5-km walk to an unexcavated Maya ruin. Contact Goyo’s Info Center. Av. Rojo Gomez, Puerto Morelos. Tel: Cancun (9) 810-6179 or from outside Cancun 044-98-10-6179.
